Mythbuster Michael Gracie on Andros South

Fantastic stuff from FIBFest participant and blogger Michael Gracie from his trip to Andros South, Deneki’s Bahamian lodge.  A wonderful read as MG clears up some of the trip-postponing fears you might have.

I want to clear up the FUD (fear, uncertainty, and doubt) from the layman’s point of view, and what follows are what I see as the three biggest misconceptions about fishing South Andros Island.

That FIBfest trip looks like it was a really good time.

I don’t think it sucked. Oh Andros… some day I’m going to get there.

Dude, loved that! Totally dead on, too. For years I’ve been hearing people say that Andros (I think they meant North Andros) and the Bahamas in general have small bonefish, but lots of them. That couldn’t be truer, UNLESS they’re implying that they didn’t also have monsters. Many of my own clients have told me they caught bigger fish in Cayman, but that’s simply because they really couldn’t fly fish all that well. (Not trying to be an ass, just stating fact.) If they show up and cast like that in Andros, from a skiff, the guide is going to take them to giant schools so they can actually catch fish. That’s his job. So, needless to say I was a little worried when I booked my first trip to Andros… where I broke the double digit mark in less than 4 hrs fishing.

As for bonefish there being picky: I only ever use 1 fly, just one: a #2 Gotcha Clouser, tied kinda bushy. I could probably also use an actual Gotcha and be fine.

Lastly, as previously stated on this site, I’ve now had a client hook a bonefish with 1 foot of leader out of the rod tip. He could’ve poked it in the nose. Most people I fish miss fish cause they’re too close, not too far.

I hope we get to fish together some day.
