Just clocking this podcast episode from Flylords, who are doing the thing and doing it well.
The Bahamas conversation starts at about 13:30.
Of course, I was loud and angry about this topic the last time this came up. This is the whole Prescott idea again. It was dumb then and it remains dumb. I don’t know if Prescott is behind it this time, I’ve stopped paying attention to him (which… 5 stars, highly encourage).
I agree with the Flylord take here.
They also ask (at the start of the pod) “how many fly rods do you need?” I just added my 32nd… but, really, I fish such a small % of those and many of them are just rods I’ve moved away from over the last 30 years, but haven’t thrown out or given away. More than a couple of the rod makers have since shut down (remember Albright or Rise?).
For a trip to Xmas Island, I really want two 8’s (maybe 3? I broke one on the first day last year), tho 10’s and maybe a 9 or 11 wt. For a trip to Idaho, I’ll bring two 6 wts for the boat, maybe a 7 for streamers (that I never actually fish) and maybe a 4 or 5 wt. for creek fishing or dry fly fishing. Throw in my son’s Echo Gecko for good measure.
I like to fish a 4 or 5 for my Upper Sac or McCloud fishing.
I like a 7 or 8 for my SF Bay striper fishing.
If I have less-fishy friends who I’m going to fish with, maybe I need two or three 5 weights for a weekend.
Ya know… there are reasons… maybe not to own 32, but, again… I probably only fish 5-7 of those rods a year.
I do like a new rod though.
