The Final Tally – Where you all want to fish

I left the poll open for a bit to see if I couldn’t get some more feedback on places you were looking to make it to.  The top 10 are below.

Andros is the clear winner, followed by Belize, the Seychelles, Cuba and Los Roques for the top 5.  I’m feeling really, really fortunate that after April 2, I will have fished the two places most folks want to get to.

The Seychelles look just fantastic. Pirates or no Pirates, the place is certainly on my “List,” although it isn’t a place I’m going to try and get to in my next 5 trips (unless I get roughly 500x as much money from advertising).

Cuba, coming in tied for 4th, is still a bit of a surprise.  Imagine what is going to happen when this place is finally opened for us Yanks?  I know there are many, many folks down in South Florida that feel strongly we should maintain our embargo of Cuba, but for the overwhelming majority of us in the other 49 States, it is just madness that we trade with Vietnam and China, but can’t go fishing in Cuba without fear of reprisal. Just say’n.

Florida coming in tied for 6th is a bit odd since Florida is the second biggest state for this blog in terms of readership.  Maybe the FL folks just took it for granted that they were going to fish FL. Florida is down for sure in my “Next 5” line-up.

After the top 10, there wasn’t a destination that got over four votes.  I guess I have a better idea of where to look when I’m looking for less pressured flats.  Only two destinations scored a “0” in the poll.  Guadeloupe (which had been in the Catch e-zine a little while back) and Penrhyn (which I had heard was being booked by someone).  Both pretty niche places, I suppose.

I think my top 5 I’m trying to get to… Andros… headed there in a month, Florida, Aitutaki, Puerto Rico and maybe Belize again.  There are a lot of places I want to fish, but these are trips I actively look into and the reasons are more than just how many fish I can catch an hour.  The targets may change in the coming years, but that’s what is on my wish list at the moment.  There are others that may prove more do-able… Hawaii, Exuma, Abaco, Grand Bahama, Cancun.  Looking forward to traveling is almost as good as actually being there… OK, it isn’t, but that’s what we tell ourselves to make the waiting more bearable.

I’ll make it back to Florida some day.  It’s been a couple of years since my last trip there.

I caught a crab.

  1. Dude, check out my latest (lazy-assed) post to see why Andros ROCKS! The first scene is so, soooo, sweeet.

  2. I really hope to be heading back to fish with Charlie this fall… spring was looking good, but we decided to try a different time of year… just for a change, you know.
