Hey Santa, this is all I want for Xmas!

OK… I’m ready to write my letter to Santa… know what I want this year.  How about my own private Bahamian Island!?!!

A little stroll through the listings at Private Islands Online reveals… well… A LOT of private islands for sale.  I had no idea this much of the Bahamas was up for the highest bidder.

You can buy Dinna Cay for only $795,000… in the Exumas, 7 acres…

Seven-acre private island situated in beautiful Exuma Land and Sea Park with deep-water access. The island is undeveloped and is well suited for a single family home plus caretaker’s quarters. Dinna is the only small island like this on the market in Exuma, and in a beautiful location near Halls Pond Cay. Motivated seller.

DinnaCay

All this could be yours.

I can’t imagine going and buying an island in the Bahamas… OK, I CAN imagine it… yeah, imagining it right now… yup, still imagining it.

Must be “difficult” to actually build a house on something like that… get a work crew there, get power, water… the logistical nightmares must be plentiful and multifaceted.

For that price you could spend about 200 weeks in Los Roques… although the tip at the end would be a real killer.

Field and Stream, Bonefish Ideas

In my eternal search for bonefish content, I stumbled upon an article in Field & Stream about bonefish lodges by John Merwin.  Now, John Merwin likely knows a thing or two about angling, as the list of books attributed to the name would imply.

The places he lists are probably fantastic.  Most are probably still in business (this was from 2006, so, ya never know).  That said, a couple lines from the article stuck in my craw and annoyed me to no end (well, not to NO end, but ya know… just to be dramatic).

Unless you’re a well-traveled Bahamas veteran, there are two rules to follow. First, go to a well-established lodge. Second, use a reputable U.S. sporting-travel agency to make your bookings.

So says John, to which I say “Bah!”  There are scores of DIY, self-guided folks out there who neither require well-established lodges nor US sporting-travel agencies to make their bookings.  If you have the money to do those things, great, it probably would result in a smoother trip more pointed at the heart of success.  However, you no more NEED to go to a lodge and pay someone to book the trip than you NEED to bring an $800 rod.

I guess that’s one of my underlying beliefs… it doesn’t take $5K, it doesn’t take a Sage or an Able.  Bonefish are within reach if you are OK with a bumpy ride, a lumpy mattress and store bought beer.

Just say’n.

Olsen Twin Water Bones

That’s to say… really skinny.  Just how skinny are we talking here?  Well, you know how they say your child can drown in just inches of water?  Well, bonefish can swim in that same amount of water, as it turns out. Deneki Outdoors has some really cool pics on their blog with pics of bones in tiny, little, itsy-bitsy water.  Check it out.

Just air drying a dorsal.

Somewhere

They say you have to start somewhere… I guess this is somewhere.

As I scheme and plot my next bonefish outing, my mind is on a near continual loop as I see bonefish in my dreams, read about bonefish from books, scan magazines and ezines, message boards and glory shots.

For the purposes of posterity I should point out that when it comes to bonefishing there are a few things you should know:

  1. I’ve done very little of it
  2. I’m cheap
  3. I’m a stay-at-home dad with an active fantasy life (in this case, centered around bonefish).
