Long Island, the fishy one.

I’ve heard about the Long Island Bonefishing Lodge, a semi-DIY operation. Recently a crew of blogger types went to check it out.

Here’s Mike’s report.

Not this one.

Long Island is one of those places I’ve long wanted to visit. It has a very good DIY reputation, making it one of those budget friendlier spots.

Yeah… that one. Looks nice, doesn’t it?

I sent Mike some flies and all I got was this awesome post

I sent some flies with Mike for him to go catch some Bahamian bonefish with. It was his first trip in search of bones.

His posts about the experience are awesome.

You reach a point, staring across these endless shimmering flats, when your brain refuses to go on, refuses to sustain the intense focus, refuses to continue to filter the overwhelming visual input pouring in as you try to divine the shadowy shapes of bonefish – tropical snow blindness, I suppose, brought on by sun and wind and want – and you begin to wonder whether the problem is that there’s no fish to be seen or that you are simply incapable of seeing them. Doubt creeps in. Doubt, and the deep suspicion that your angling inadequacies are being exposed in the whole.

I know what you mean...

I know what you mean…

The Keys

Derek Rust gets after it. I really enjoyed my day on the water with Derek on the recent Keys trip. He just put up a blog post at Skinny Water Culture reflecting on Tarpon Season, in photos, which is about way more than tarpon.

poon edit

OK, some of it IS about tarpon.

Shane goes to Paradise

Paradise Lodge, that is. I think this was a hosted trip that Shane did with his wife.  Funny thing is watching his wife blow a tarpon shot and get a little angry… been there, done that and can totally relate to that feeling.

Cool video.

Some Acklins History… from WW II

I dig history. Heck, I have a BA in history which is almost as useful as a poetry degree. I love reading about WW II and actually just finished The Guns at Last Light.

So, it was with some interest I read Scott Heywood’s latest blog post about a WW II U Boat attack in the Bahamas and how it touched the people of Acklins.

Fishing with Martin

The first day we fished in Florida Adrienne and I were out with Martin Carranza out on the waters of Biscayne Bay.

It looked like this…

That dark stuff eventually came to visit us.

That dark stuff eventually came to visit us.

Today I got a picture of what fishing there might be like when the lights are on.

Yeah... Nice.

Yeah… Nice.

I’d like another shot at it!

Chris, a SUP and a Bonefish

Chris gets after it. He’s one of the Skinny Water Culture guys and a passionate Heat fan (so he’s happy today) and he’s been getting after it in a big way.

He’s recently been hitting the water on his stand up paddleboard and he’s been doing pretty damn well on it.

I'll bet that was nice.

Not Happening

I got to the little bait shop in San Leandro and I asked about the stripers.

“Not happening” he said.

Conditions hadn’t been kind, it turns out. Low tides with high winds had muddied up the bay and kept the fish from finding the little spots one can find them on foot.

We looked over Google Maps anyway and he pointed out where I needed to go. I figured I’d go, just so I had the right place when and if the conditions ever were right. I had also screwed up the tides. I should have been there on the outgoing tide, not the incoming. The baitfish get pushed down to the fish… these fish aren’t climbing up on a flat to feed. So, lessons learned in quick succession.

I went out regardless. I had the new Redington Vapen and I wanted to see how it felt (it felt kind of awesome, btw). I found the water and quickly could see potential in the place. There was structure, current and bait, there just weren’t any stripers. There were a LOT of fish around, but they were elasmobranchs of the flattened variety.

Mr. Ray

I didn’t see a striper and given the amount of baitfish I could see and the number of rays I saw, I think they weren’t there. It was a sweet, sweet little spot and I’ll go back. I didn’t mind it basically being a homeless encampment. No one bothered me and one guy even offered to bring me a chair while I was wading… although I’m still not sure why.

If there were fish around, they should have been right there.

If there were fish around, they should have been right there.

This was urban fishing. There were freeways and sirens and homeless people and what looked like a pretty good environment. It would have been good to get a grab, but this isn’t like throwing a line out in the Keys. You are either going to catch stripers or you are going to catch nothing. I caught nothing, but it was worth it to get out and see some new water.

Florida’s memorable moments

I wanted to share a few memorable moments from the FL trip. Every trip has those little nuggets and they are what sticks with us.

  • The moment, fishing with Martin Carranza (website, blog) and Adrienne in Biscayne Bay that the cuda I had on the line came up to the surface and flared it’s gills like a tarpon. So awesome.
  • Being on Derek Rust’s (Captderekrust@gmail.com) boat with Davin, telling stories and hearing about Derek’s guiding experiences, and blowing some shots at big tarpon.

  • Hearing my rod tip buzz while wading a flat with Matt. Asking Matt if he was buzzing and him confirming it. (Next time, I’m going to GTFO of there instead of staying around, looking for fish)
  • Seeing my first meatball of tarpon raging down a flat while fishing with Bill Horn and Adrienne. Man… so. many. fish.
  • Listening to Eric Estrada talk about his permit paintings.

It was a good trip.
