Lori-Ann Murphy at El Pescador via ESPN

AMBERGRIS CAYE, Belize — “What’s a nice girl like you doing in a place like this,” I asked.

OK, not a very original line but this time an honest question.

Lori-Ann Murphy is the fishing and guest relation’s host for one of the best fishing and most famous lodges in the tropics, El Pescador Lodge in the Central American country of Belize.

Lori-Ann is also in the new fly fishing show Buccaneers and Bones, the successor to Pirates of the Flats.

El Pescador, Buccaneers and Bones

More news on Buccaneers and Bones from the filming down in Belize and El Pescador.

…this past week Ambergris Caye was host to some heavy weights in the entertainment industry as they filmed “Buccaneers and Bones”. El Pescador (Lodge) was chosen from three locations in Belize to host Orion Multimedia, Michael Keaton actor/director, Tom Brokaw news anchor/author, Yvon Chouninard founder Patagonia, Bill Klyn director Bonefish and Tarpon Trust, Zach Gilford actor, Thomas McGuane acclaimed author, Lori-Ann Murphy director of fishing at El Pescador, and Aaron Adams, scientist, Bonefish and Tarpon Trust. According to Ali Flota of El Pescador, this was the “Coup de grace of fly fishing”, and truly an honor.

Ambergris Daily Dishes on Michael Keaton

Buccaneers and Bones” is the succesor to Pirates of  the Flats and the Ambergris Daily shed a little light on the filming currently going on in Belize.

The “Buccaneers and Bones” series features the anglers’ passion for fishing and the camaraderie they share as they search for answers on how to safeguard our environment. In addition to fishing the famed salt water flats of Belize, these notables are fishing for answers, too. How can we save our last great coastal environments? It’s a question that has been the heart of Bonefish and Tarpon Trust’s mission since 1998, and is being pursued by some of the world’s top scientists.

As you can imagine, I’m looking forward to this.

New Outdoor Channel Show does Belize Bonefish

I caught a recent bonefishy mention regarding Zach Gilford, the Friday Night Lights star and Gus in The River Why.

Turns out he’s working on a show for the Outdoor Channel with Michael Keaton and Tom Brokaw down in Belize… the show is bonefish-centric.

Kind of sounds like Pirates 2.

Whatever it is, I want to see it… see, bonefish are kind of my thing.

Beyond the mention on Chelsea Lately, I don’t see another word about the bonefishing TV project.  I’ll have to ask around.  If you know something, please share.

Belize Bonefish and Zombies

I found a bonefishing story about a recent trip to Belize on a blog that might not seem like a prime candidate for bonefish… The Zombie Preparedness Guide.  Go figure.

Luckily, there were no zombies in Belize, but there were bonefish, which means all is still right with the world and post-apocalyptic preparedness can wait.

Maria, on the search for bonefish... or zombies.

MT Bonefish

That’s not Mount Bonefish, but Montana… as in some Montanans go bonefishing.  Now, it is April and here in the Bay Area tonight it will be down in the 50’s.  In Bozeman it will get down to 39.  Folks in Montana have excellent trout fishing and really, really long winters.  Therefore, I can understand why those rugged folks from Montana might, in a moment of divine weakness, look to the Caribbean for a little get-away.

This group from MT. heads to Belize, Turneffe Flats Lodge where the weather is warm and the fishing is good.  This trip was their fifth year in a row.

I don’t know at what point I get to head to a place like Turneffe Flats every year.  I don’t think that life is about to start any time soon.

I'd like to go here.

More Adam Barker in Belize

So, I juuuuust posted something about my fishing friend Mikey Wier heading down to Belize and fellow trip-mate Adam Barker shooting some great pics.  Well, Adam has a blog and pics from that trip are now up.  Worth a gander.

Some of Adam's fine, fine work.

Mikey Wier and Adam Barker – Belize

I was checking in on fishing friend and Patagonia Fly Fishing Ambassador Mikey Wier’s blog, Burl Fish, and was happy to see some pics from his recent trip to Belize.  He was down there with a group of anglers doing a mother ship trip.  One of those anglers was Adam Barker, a photographer from Salt Lake City.  Some gooooood looking shots.

Nice shot Adam!

You can see more of the shots on Mikey’s blog here. You can read more about his trip here.

You can find more photos by Adam Barker at his website.  He does a lot of skiing/outdoors type photography, but has a gallery devoted to fly fishing as well.

Tag Ends – 3/24/10

Bits and pieces from around the blogosphere:

  • I saw that the Fly Fish Chick made it to Exuma recently… and that seems like a very good place to be.
  • Even the Trout Underground is getting in on the action, finding the Louis Cahill photo gallery of Andros South.
  • Flatswalker has been talking Tarpon.
  • Life on the Cay has a first bonefishing lesson in Belize.

Karl’s First Bonefish

The Being Karl blog (new to me) put up a report about his trip to Belize and his first bonefish.  Always great to hear about someone’s first bonefish… it can be a revelation.

They are at El Pescador… the place I was hoping to go this summer.  I’ve moved my Belize 2010 trip to Belize 2011, but stories like this make me want to head there… um… now.

I make another cast and, bam, I get a hookup.  The fish takes off and is clearly the hardest fighting fish I’ve ever hooked on a fly.  After a couple of minutes of tussle, I bring it to the boat where Carlos reaches down, grips the fish, about 14 inches in length,  and lifts it up for me to see.  My first bonefish on a fly.  I had imagined it would take a day of trying and here we’ve been fishing 15 minutes and I’ve got my first in the boat.

El Pescador photo... go there.

I haven’t seen the Being Karl blog before.  The salty stuff is an outlier, but it is honest and not pretentious in the least.
