Aitutaki in FFSW

Just got a new issue of Fly Fishing in Salt Waters (thanks Steve) and I was pleased to see a piece on Aitutaki.  For those of you not familiar, that is an atoll in the South Pacific, a part of the Cook Islands.

The fish there are few in number and large in size.  It isn’t a place you are going to run up the score, but it is a place you stand a good chance of finding a 10 pound bonefish.

The atoll has received a bit of press because of the movie made about taking a local net fisherman and turning him into a fly fishing guide.  There were some big names involved in that project in terms of companies throwing their weight behind it.  There has been a guide working Aitutaki for a number of years that didn’t make it into the movie, but did make it into the story, which was nice to see.  That is Butch Leone, who I did an interview with.

Fly Fishing in Salt Waters is just a solid mag.  You should check it out.

Mexico Expedition

Worth a read over at the Costa Del Mar blog “The Watery Rave.”

I hadn’t been over there in a while.  Looking good… looking really good.

This from an epic story about traveling down to MX in a veggie oil powered van to convert the locals and find fish.

We first thought that the U-joints were bad, but eventually determined that we broke the transmission mount and that the entire driveline was getting torqued upward. Mexican’s are very resourceful people and at a small repair shop in Cabo they were able to find our exact part within 30 minutes and had it installed in no time flat, which prevented Chris from having to tolerate the local dog population.

Deneki’s top Bonefishing Posts from 2011

Deneki has a habit of pounding out really exceptional bonefishing content.  2011 was no exception.

Here is a list of their top bonefishing posts from 2011.

This was the year that I got to go to Andros South.  It is a very special place.  The Slack Tide Bar, the food, the guides the WATER.  Exceptional.

Great Place.

Deep Water Cay

Well look at that… a promo video for Deep Water Cay.

Now, they mention permit. VERY few permit are caught out there from what I’ve heard.  Don’t count on that.

(Although it is starting to happen… they are there, if you spend the time looking for them)

Water Cay Lodge – GBI

Hmmm… never heard of this place, but saw it in This is Fly.

This place is on the North Shore of Grand Bahama.  There isn’t a lot on the North Shore. All the roads on the south.  I recall seeing the north side on the flights in and out and I’ve always wanted to get there.  I actually tried to make it to the north once, but my rental car did not have what it would have taken to get there.

This partial review is from The Angling Report.

“As for guides, I fished with Ezra, who is unbelievably good. His brother, Sidney, is the head guide, and there is no doubt in my mind as to how good he is. But what about the fish? They are big, abundant and wild. I landed 18 in one day as a cold front moved in. They were all between four and nine pounds. I also lost several that day that would have gone into double digits.

Odds of me fishing here are slight… but GBI is an easy flight.  If this is your kind of place, it wouldn’t take much to get there.

The place is booked through Angling Destinations.

It does make me ask some questions… You have North Point Riding Club, Deep Water Cay, Pelican Bay and there are a couple new options as well.  From what I understand there is a lot more inventory than there is demand. I’m hoping they don’t over-build.

Yeah… so… tomorrow

I’m off tomorrow and life has kept me from really packing until… well… pretty much tonight.

I did put the new 9 wt. Rio Tropical Clouser line on my Lamson Lightspeed reel last night and I moved my Bruce Chard Teeny 8 wt. line from my TFO LA 375 to my Okuma Helios (the TFO bit the dust in Andros and I have yet to send it back). I’m also bringing my Ross CLA.  The star of that bunch is clearly the Lamson, but it is such a big reel.  I got it in the hopes of putting in on a yet-to-be purchased 10 wt. for things like tarpon or Dorado. I know it will do the trick though and I’m not worried about a lack of balance because it isn’t like I’m steelhead fishing… this isn’t “the fish of a thousand casts,” more like “stalking the gray ghost.”

Normally, I’m an 8 wt. guy, but people keep telling me that I need to throw a 9 wt. due to the trade winds. Hearing BOTB reader John talk about recently fishing on Crooked with nothing less than 20 mph winds and doing it with an 8 wt. the whole time does make me question the “You need to throw a 9” kind of thinking, but I’m bringing a 9 and that’s where I’ll start off.

One thing is really clear at this point… I’m going to need a bigger suitcase to fit the sleeping bag, tent and pad.

I plan on writing every day I’m there and when the sun goes down I will head in to steal wireless from somewhere.

Tomorrow, 7:30 AM, I’m on a flight to HI.  Can’t wait.

Me, exactly where I'm going to be.
