Andros South

Some fishing bloggers you probably read are headed for Andros South next week.  I would have been among them were it not for moving/childcare hurdles that could not be overcome.  I’m glad that at least some of my flies will be there.  I sent Pete from Fishing Jones about 8 patterns to try out down there.  Hope they work.

I hope to make it down there some day soon-ish.   This recent trip report from Rick Grassett about a hosted trip to Andros South makes it sound like a place I want to be… badly… very, very, very badly.

Andros South... yup... I want to be there.

A Plea to Mother Ocean and Father Time

Joe Doggett has a plea to Mother Ocean and Father Time for another trip to Christmas Island. The story is in the Houston Chronicle and it is a good read.

Christmas Island sure does seem like a wonderful, fantastic bonefishing destination and I hope to write my own story about the place and the fish one of these days… probably not any time soon, sadly.

Read Brian Gies’ interview about Christmas Island.

Looks nice.

Sea of Cortez Bonefish

Well… look at that… a bonefish vid from Puerto Penasco in the Sea of Cortez… You don’t see anything ever a lot of reports about bones in the Sea of Cortez, tucked in there behind Baja California.  Really, I tend to think of Rooster Fish and trips put together by Gary Bulla.

This fish is hardly a bruiser… not even close to really even an 8 wt. class fish, but it does show that they can turn up in some places you might not expect them.

Pacific Coast bones are a scarce commodity, really.  While they get massive in the South Pacific and around Hawaii, the bones of San Diego are rather smallish and the bones of Puerto Penasco (or really, THE bonefish of Puerto Penasco) seem similarly diminutive.  Probably still a place to pack your 8 wt., but probably for other species.

Deneki on the Wind

Deneki Outdoors puts out some really good, quality blog posts in addition to running one of the best lodges out there, Andros South.

This post talks about the wind and how ya need a little of the gusty stuff for the best fishing.  Calm is nice to look at, but tough to fish.

Of course… ya don’t want too much, which is usually the case in the places where bonefish live.

As I said, Deneki also runs Andros South.  There will be a collection of bloggers headed to South Andros in a few days to fish and write/share their experiences.  I was invited to go, but between selling one house, moving and getting ready to sell a second, I just couldn’t make it work.  I will be following the festivities and probably sinking into a deep and troubling depression.

Here’s the line-up from the Deneki website:

Should be  fun to see what  comes out of the week.

Ozzie Bones

I haven’t looked too much to see if there were bones in Australia, but this little story popped up courtesy of The River’s Edge blog/website about a bonefish caught near Exmouth in Western Australia.

Now, given the price of airfare to Australia, it certainly won’t be a budget trip for anyone living in the States, but it does underscore the range of this favorite gamefish.  If you happen to find yourself headed for Western Australia, pack that 8 wt. and tie up some Gotcha’s.

Australian Bonefish... and now you know.

PS – Happy Birthday to my dad, who has his birthday today, April 30.  He got me fishing at a young age and kept me interested by routinely outfishing me for steelhead on the Klamath River.  Once we discovered fly fishing, he kept me interested by underfishing me on the Upper Sacramento.  We’ve fly fished British Columbia, Montana, Wyoming, Oregon and Grand Bahama together (and California, of course) and aside from the gas, you couldn’t ask for a better fishing partner or father.  Thanks dad and Happy Birthday.

NYT Throwback – 1994 Howell Raines – Xmas Island

The Gray Lady has dished out some good stories on the Gray Ghost over the years.  While searching for some bonefish nuggets I found this story from Howell Raines from 1994 all about Christmas Island… Pursuing the Bonefish Across a Watery Desert.

Albula vulpes, “the gray ghost of the sand flats,” is one of the most lied about and lusted after fish in the world. Catching one is not as hard as devotees like to pretend, but it is hard enough.

See… that’s nice.

Belize Bonefish and Zombies

I found a bonefishing story about a recent trip to Belize on a blog that might not seem like a prime candidate for bonefish… The Zombie Preparedness Guide.  Go figure.

Luckily, there were no zombies in Belize, but there were bonefish, which means all is still right with the world and post-apocalyptic preparedness can wait.

Maria, on the search for bonefish... or zombies.

Cozumel Bonefish Vid

A nice little vid featuring bonefishing around Cozumel… one of those places you might head with the family for vacation… bring your rod!

Oh bonefish… I wish you lived with carp and stripers.  Just say’n.

Surf Perch Day

I’m a fan of global warming in one sense and wish it would hurry on up so that our waters off of Santa Cruz might be in the 70’s and I could catch bonefish an hour’s drive away.  Alas, that’s not the reality I’m living in and I’m told such a change would take thousands of years… so, I have my car running right now, in the driveway and I’m eating only beans in the hopes that the  added CO2 and methane will speed things.

Until then, and also until I hit the lottery, I won’t be bonefishing this weekend, but will, instead, be taking my 8 wt. to the coast near Santa Cruz in the hopes of a) not dying, and b) getting a surf perch on the fly.

Should be interesting and terrifying.  The idea of 4 foot swells, while standing thigh deep… well… I’ve done the math and it doesn’t seem favorable (although I never was really good at math).

Oh... great. I wish I was in South Andros.

Xcalak Bonefish

Xcalak… Mexico… bonefish.
