Bimini Bonefish and Shark Video

Here’s a well done little video featuring bonefishing in Bimini.  Now… it isn’t fly fishing, but it is well done.

The guide is Fred Rolle, who, as you might guess, also guides fly fishing anglers.

Direct Flights to the Bahamas

When your bonefishing tastes start to get beyond Nassau or Grand Bahama, you start to lose direct flight options really quickly.   No one would really expect you to get a direct flight to Crooked, but how about Andros?  Well, you can get a charter to Andros, but not regular service.  If you are looking for scheduled flights, you have four Bahamian options to choose from beyond Nassau or Grand Bahama… Abaco,  Exuma, Eleuthera and Andros.

Air Sunshine – No More Bahamas Flights

On the Bahamas.com website you’ll see Air Sunshine listed as making direct flights to the out islands of the Bahamas.  This is no longer the case as Air Sunshine no longer flies to the Bahamas at all.

Abaco

Turns out there are a lot of carriers flying to Abaco.  American, Continental Connections, BahamasAir (almost all their flights go through Nassau, but they do fly direct from West Palm Beach to Marsh Harbor), Delta (looks like a Wed. and Sun. flight DIRECT FROM ATLANTA, $485), Twin Air Calypso, Air Gate, and Cherokee Air.  Now, some of these outfits are charter based as opposed to having regularly scheduled routes.   The Bahamas.com website makes it look like there are regular flights, but if so, the carrier are doing a fine job of hiding those routes on their websites.

Exuma

Tus out there are all sorts of flights direct to Exuma. You can get there direct from Toronto, Atlanta, Miami, Ft. Lauderdale,    Watermakers Air is listed at the Bahamas.com website as making direct flights. Watermakers Air is a charter service and they say they can also fly direct to Andros… which is good to keep in mind.

Andros

It is possible to get to Andros direct through 4 weekly flights from Ft. Lauderdale.  Hank’s Place has a list of travel options (Hank’s is still for sale, by the way).

Eleuthera

You can also get to Eleuthera direct. Again, Southern Florida is your gateway and Continental can get you there.  Check out the Discover Eleuthera Bahamas website for more thoughts on travel.

FYI – did you know you can subscribe to Bonefish on the Brain?  Well, ya can.  See “Get the Goods”  in the top right corner and sign up.  That way you’ll never miss a post (and I may do some give aways for subscribers soon).

Hooked on the Bahamas – The Irish Times – Sat, Jun 12, 2010

With over 50 years of angling under my belt, bonefishing in the Bahamas is the best I’ve ever had, writes DEREK EVANS

‘ELEVEN O’CLOCK, moving left to right, 30ft out. Trust me on this one, Derek. Strip, strip, stop, strip,” Ishi whispers. And whizzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. My first bonefish is on and ripping line from the reel at a rate of knots. I’m down to backing line as the run continues across the flats. Will this fish ever tire? My introduction to fly-fishing in the Bahamas is complete.

via Hooked on the Bahamas – The Irish Times – Sat, Jun 12, 2010.

Even the Irish are going bonefishing… why am I not on the water somewhere???

Want to fish Bimini?

Well… you might want to do so quickly before every last mangrove in Bimini is taken out, filled in and turned into golf courses and resorts… because the world doesn’t have enough golf courses.

I found this little video of Bonefish Ebbie talking about the Bimini Bay development that is dredging up bonefish habitat to make way for pure and bottled greed.

Read more about the badness that is this Bimini Development.

Bonefish Ebbie can be found here.

Colton Harris Bonefishing in Abaco?

#UPDATE# – Colton Harris was caught today in the Bahamas… I had a feeling this would be the end… he wasn’t even fishing! Read more here.

I read the first story in Outside Magazine a while ago and caught news today via the OM Facebook page about a possible update on Colton Harris, teenage criminal mastermind and modern day Robbin Hood (without the benevolence or otherwise good intentions).

Seems Colton may have stolen a plane in Indiana and flown to Abaco… where he promptly crashed.  The kid taught himself to fly, but has yet to get a hang of the landing part.

From the Black Fly Bonefish Club:

@BFBonefishClub :Much excitement over the barefoot bandit landing in our frontyard at the lodge. Local hog hunters were not successful in finding him.

Let’s see… a 6’5″ white kid roaming around Abaco?  How long could the kid really hold out?  I’m guessing he’ll be sticking out a bit when he isn’t crashing in the vacation homes of wealthy Americans who may have second/third/fourth homes in the Bahamas.

I didn’t see a fly rod in this picture…

Hi... I'll be staying at your Abaco beach house, if that's OK with yoou... and even if it isn't.

Long Island Bonefish

While I’m up in Oregon, I’m going to post a bunch of bonefishy videos found on Youtube.  Hope you enjoy.

This little short hookup is from Long Island.  Good job clearing the line.  I don’t know that I’d want my hemos hanging from my shirt right there… seem like a good thing to catch line as it is flying out fishward.

How to land a bonefish

Saw this on Youtube and had to  pass it along… this is exactly how you land a bonefish… kind of… well, it got the job done in the end, at least.

Luckily, she didn’t break the rod. When you slide your hand up the rod, you are greatly reducing the ability of the rod to absorb the stress of the fish.  More than one angler has seen their rod snap when they shorten their rod like that.

The clip though… that’s just pure awesomeness.  Glad someone didn’t take themselves too seriously and shared that clip.

That’s sans  guide out in Exuma.

WTF?!! Bow hunting bones in Bimini?

I saw this video, which shows a total fuqueing douchebag with a bow trying to kill a bonefish in Bimini.  He missed.  The douchebagocity of this just leaves me speechless.  This guy is mayor of Douchebagville, a town in the country of Douchebagistan.

(looks like the Mayor took his video down… good call)

Seriously… WTF?!
