A quick photo review of 2012

I saw this over at Fat Guy Fly Fishing:

I thought that was pretty cool so I decided to do a totally lame version of my own with generic jazz and longer times spend on each picture.

Predictions – 2013

I’m feeling a bit prescient today (I think I learned that word from the Dune books), so I figure I should take advantage of this and let you all know some things that seem, through the mists of time, sure to be true in 2013.

  • I will find myself in Grand Bahama in April (OK, this one is easy since I just bought the tickets) and I will throw a fly at bonefish (at least one and likely more).
  • The blog will continue, growing marginally, slowly, organically (because I don’t advertise).
  • Politics and the inability of our leaders to find common ground and work together will continue to be the greatest threat to American security.
  • Gear makers will make new gear and this gear will be slightly more expensive than their best gear from last year.
  • In a blind test, you will be unable to tell the difference between their top gear from the last three years.
  • I will intend to tie way, way more flies than I will actually tie.
  • Sharks will be caught off the Dumbarton Pier by my girl and I.
  • Dozens of new blogs will start and 2 or 3 will get past 6 posts within 6 months of their founding.
  • The Fiberglass Manifesto, This River is Wild, Flatswalker and the Skinny Water Culture Blog will continue to be favorites.
  • Writing the blog will continue to be an overall very positive experience, sparking good conversations, teaching me things and otherwise being fun.

Let’s see how close I come to the mark. Happy 2013 everyone.

A poll about subscriptions

I have something like 261 people who have signed up to be subscribers. At this point that is supposed to mean you get a notification of each new post. Since I post pretty much daily, it is a little redundant, especially if you follow the Facebook page, since I post each new post there as well. The bummer is that notices don’t seem to be sending with any predictability at this point. Sometimes they go, sometimes they don’t and I have really now way of predicting when, or even if, such notices will make their way out to you, my loyal (ya know, for the most part) readers.

So… I wonder about what should be done with subscriptions. If I should just try to find another tool for the same end or if I should look to do something different.

Let me know what you’d like to see happen.

Thanks.

Bonefishing!

I own most of the books about bonefishing out there. I own Fly-Fishing for Bonefish, and Fly Fishing for Bonefish, as well as Bonefish Fly Patterns and the Fly Fisherman’s Guide to Saltwater Prey. These, I believe, are most of the important works if you are a bonefish angler. There is one book I didn’t have and finally, it is now mine. I’m speaking, of course, of Bonefishing! by Randall Kaufmann.

Christmas came and when it departed I was up one book.

Looks pretty sweet. Can’t wait to digest the knowledge therein.

A tome.

A tome.

Obligitory – A look back at 2012

I was reminded by Troutrageous that it was time for me to look back at 2012.

What a year, eh? I had highlights in my personal and fishing lives. It will be a hard year to surpass, really. So many wonderful things happened. I can’t help but feel like a very lucky guy.

Here is what 2012 held for me.

I welcomed 2012 in at the Yaak Tavern in MT where I had the very strong suspicion I had met my future wife.

I got a chance to go to Cuba with Jim Klug and a bunch of writers. Amazing experience that included my magazine worthy Tarpon shot.

My divorce got finalized.

I got engaged.

I discovered the joys of pier fishing with my girl who loves sharks and loves being my fishing buddy.

The girl and her shark.

I got married.

A good day.

A good day.

The honeymoon brought me back to El Pescador in Belize.

I got two saltwater trips in, which for me, being fully employed and having split custody of a 5 year old, is a pretty good trick. Cuba and Belize are kind of choice locations and I feel very fortunate to have been able to visit both in 2012.

It has been a very, very good year.  I’m looking forward to what 2013 will bring.

I have one trip lined up already. This is to Grand Bahama for Spring Break. It will be my intro to the Bahamas for my little girl and my new wife. I’m thinking this could be a good thing.

All the best to you in 2013 and thanks for reading and taking part in the blog.

Awesome Picture

I like jacks. Jacks are simply fun to catch. They are aggressive and they pull hard and they eat flies. Questions?

I saw this picture a few days back on my facebook feed, but I couldn’t find it again when I went looking for it. Luckily, the guys over at Moldy Chum did. Check out that link. There’s a video too.

That's a cool picture.

That’s a cool picture.

Does make me think of this classic from Skinny Water Culture.

Cool.

Cool.

Pause

Today I had a hard time coming up with something to write which wasn’t about the kids killed in an elementary school in Connecticut. As I get ready to wrap Christmas gifts for my little girl this weekend I can’t but help thinking of those parents in CT who have gifts already bought and hidden away for kids who will never come home from school.

That’s crushing.

So, today, let’s just all focus on being better.

It feels a little bit today like it did on 9/12. Something horrible has happened and many of us don’t feel safe and we are worried about the future.

Let’s be better.  Let us all be better.

Mkay?

Good. Glad we had this chat.

A day fishing with dad

My dad turned 70 earlier this year and for his gift I got a day on the water for the two of us to fish together. That was back in April and a lot went down between then and yesterday. One of those things was a health scare with my dad that threw this and pretty much any trip in question. That fear seems to have abated (dad’s doing great these days) and so it was time to get fishing.

We were going to fish the Lower Sacramento out of The Fly Shop. I love this river. It is big with big, big fish. We met at the shop, got all our stuff together and headed to the river.

Um… WTF? You can’t go fishing in Chocolate Milk!

Pretty much no one could predict that the river would blow out overnight for no readily apparent reason. We got to the boat launch, got out of the car and it was clear, within seconds, the Lower Sac was pretty far from fishable. The river had looked good the day before and there had been no rain for several days. The river had been clearing, not silting up. No explanation, just 4.5K of chocolate milk. So… on to plan B.

My dad and I headed to some private water accessed through The Fly Shop which my dad had fished (and enjoyed) previously. We didn’t need the guide for that, so he went his way and we made our way south to a private lake called Luk Lake.

It was cold and foggy, but there were fish. It was fun to row around the little lake and catch some fish with my dad. He actually caught more fish than me, which is one of those things that doesn’t happen too much these days. Another late birthday present.

My dad, hooked up.

My dad, hooked up.

While I was behind on numbers, I did manage to catch the biggest trout I’ve landed in a few years. Now… I wouldn’t say this is a wild fish, or a pretty fish, or a spectacular fish, but it was big. Sometimes you need a big, ugly, frankenfish and that’s pretty much what I got. This thing was fat with a broad back. You can see the tail is a mess and it has one of those snub noses indicating it grew too quickly. Still, it is a thrill to see that big, broad flash in the water when you see the flank of the fish for the first time.

Frankenfish trout.

Frankenfish trout.

The day was about fishing with my dad, something I get to do too seldom these days. You can never fish too much with your dad (I hope my daughter feels the same).

Here's to you dad.

Here’s to you dad.

Chaos… with teeth.

I have to say… I’d like to hook one of these on a fly. Such amazing predators.
