Spring Break is not my friend

Travel… I love BEING in wonderful places, but I really don’t like paying for it. Probably should have joined the Navy to see all those places for free! (Yes, I know it isn’t for free, folks pay an awful price to see some of those places)

Well, I didn’t and now I have to pay.  Paying is one thing, but paying over the odds is another.  That is what happens when you book a trip for the dates that happen to also be Spring Break.

A flight to Mexico just went down for $681.  WTF.

I’m unhappy about that.  How does Mexico all of a sudden cost more than a trip to Hawaii?

I guess that’s the price of fame and glory.

(Flight is up $50 since I booked)

Out of the way places

There are so many places to fish… really… SO many places, but it seems the folks who book those trips tend to send anglers to the same places.  There are plenty of outfitters who book Andros and Mexico and even Christmas or the Seychelles.  While there are so many places to fish, you have to search a bit to find an outfit that will take you some place new.

One place that isn’t on everyone’s list is Guanaja Lodge… in Honduras.

Honduras doesn’t usually rise to the top when you start talking about fly fishing destinations for bonefish.  Really, I don’t think I’ve heard it come up in casual conversation with more than one or two people… and I talk about bonefish a lot (so much it tends to annoy people).

Yup… that’s from Honduras.

El Pescador holds Tournament to Benefit BTT

A tournament at El Pescador featured tagging of bones, permit and tarpon. Sounds kind of awesome. The tournament was held by El Pescador for the benefit of the Bonefish & Tarpon Trust.

Flatswalker went to Andros

I do like a good read and Flatswalker is pretty much that.

What wasn’t perfect was the weather. Andros was under the same weather system as the Florida Keys we’d just left. Upon arrival we rigged rods and checked leaders while Charlie mixed drinks and regaled us with stories of monster bones, massive schools, and, well, everything we’d dreamed of for months. We went to bed early dreaming of giant bonefish and worrying about the weather, both with good cause.

Check out the full story here.

A little DIY from T&C

Found a story about fishing T&C… a DIY venture with a little bit of success.

T&C seems to have some of the most expensive guides anywhere.

Fly Paper and Water Cay

Scott Heywood has a new blog (Fly Paper)… and the first post I looked at was pretty much right in the zone. Check it out.

Prior to 2008, Grand Bahama Island’s Northern Horn was a tough spot to reach. Several well known operators on Grand Bahama, namely the Pinder Brothers and Greg Vincent from Pelican Bay Resort fished this area, but it required long boat rides for visiting anglers (45 minutes at a minimum) which chewed up valuable fishing time. In the fall of 2008, this problem was solved by long time Grand Bahama resident and superb bonefish guide, Sidney Thomas. Sidney and his family took the task of renovating the small bonefish lodge on remote Water Cay that was destroyed in the fall of 2003 by a series of devastating hurricanes. Along with a few experienced anglers, Sidney and his brothers knew the bonefish treasure that swam in and around the flats of Water Cay.

Bonefish song from Nonouti

Yeah… Nonouti… I had to look it up. Nanouti is part of Kiribati and a part of the Gilbert Islands.

A little about the fishing…

That doesn’t look totally like my kind of fishing.

This looks a bit better.
