Andros South

Well… it is 12:30 AM, I am home from a long journey back from Vallarta.  My 3 year old let loose with a full fledged ninja barf attack on the Bay Bridge around 9:00, which is just about as much fun as that sounds  (actually, much, much less fun).  I’m going to put “Daughter barfing in car while driving on the Bay Bridge” on that list of “Things That Suck.”

So, with barely two firing  synapses working in my otherwise bonefish-ful brain, I’m going to direct you today to Andros South and a trip report put up by the good folks over at Deneki Outdoors.

I’m a fan of Deneki although I’ve never been to Andros South and likely won’t for the next few years at least.  Looks like a great operation though and the Deneki website is all full of bonefishing goodies and tid bits.  You can follow them on Twitter, sign up for their newsletter or just make them a regular stop.

Deneki Deals on the Mantis

A great article on the Mantis Shrimp from creator of  the fly, Bob Veverka, is up at Deneki Outdoors.  Check it out.

Tag Ends – 1/31/10

A few thoughts…

  • Saw Familiar Waters for the first time in a long time… turns out they were at South Andros Lodge (owned/booked through Deneki Outdoors) and one of the participants was Mike Bias, old friend and now MT outfitter.
  • The Croup Fairy has visited our house… the bastard offspring of an illicit affair between a seal and the Tooth Fairy.  I’m not a fan.
  • I’ll be volunteering at the Fly Fishing West show in Pleasanton at the Bonefish & Tarpon Trust booth.  I’ll be there all three days.  They are trying to rope Val Atkinson into stopping by, otherwise it will just be me, trying to shake some money from your pocket to help bonefish, tarpon, permit and snook.

Rods for the Bahamas from Deneki

Once again, Deneki Outdoors is dealing the goods.  This time, they dish advice about rod selection.  While I was surprised at the suggestion of a 5 weight, the others sound like the advice offered by the luminaries.  Check out their  suggestions here.

My upcoming Bahamas trip just increased in rod count by +1.  I’ll have an 8.  I’ll have an 8/9.  Now, I’ll have a 7.  I just put the order in for a TFO Axiom 7 weight.  I have a good reel already, I have the line… all I needed was the rod (my 4 pc. 7 wt. was stolen in Mexico and my other 7 wt. is a 2 pc.).  So… now I’ll have the Axiom too.

Hey you, Axiom... want to come to the Bahamas with me?

PS… no, Deneki Outdoors didn’t really suggest a 5 wt., but check out their post to see what they did recommend and why.

Deneki and 5 ways to botch the job

Deneki Outdoors puts out some great blog posts and I’m glad… makes it easy for me!

This latest bit of bonefishy wisdom is a list of five things NOT to do, if you want to catch/land bonefish.  We like the list.

My bonefish career is short, but I’ve likely done all five already.  Can’t wait to invent even more.

Bonefish Fly Lines

Deneki had some thoughts about Rio fly lines.  It’s worth a read.

Rio Bonefish Line

Others have been asking questions about what line is best as well.  Here’s a conversation from the Dan Blanton Board.

This Reel-Time.com forum member was a fan of the Rio line as well.

Deneki gives an update, Black Fly Reports Pig

Deneki Outdoors… see, they are just wired… in with the whole “internet revolution” or whatever.  I saw their latest report from Andros South pop up and wanted to send it on to all you non-Twitterati.

The other item that caught my eye from Twitter today was from Black Fly, a lodge in Abaco.  The sweet tweet reported a THIRTY INCH bonefish caught by some lucky SOB named David.

The Bonefish Adventure website has a length to weight estimation table that puts a 30 inch fish at fifteen pounds.  Nice.

Deneki Down South (Andros, that is)

There are probably a lot of folks that are not really ready for Twitter.  Hell, I may even be one of them.  Twitter does have its uses, however.  I can follow the daily lives of some of America’s young soccer talent as they ply their trades overseas and I can follow Andrew Bennett, owner of Deneki Outdoors, as he travels down to his Andros South lodge.

Twitpic Bonefish from Deneki... sweet tweet!

You too can follow Deneki Outdoors on Twitter @deneki.

In light of the recent post about catch and release mortality, I’m digging this bonefish picture big time.  Well done!

Deneki Shares Bruce Chard's Set-Up

Bruce Chard is a flats guide of some reputation (the good kind from what I gather).  He teaches a bonefishing school in connection with Deneki Outdoors, so he has some bonefishy knowledge to drop.  Deneki recently tweeted a link to Bruce’s gear… all the way down to the knots.

I don’t know Bruce, but I think we’d get along.  His rod is a Ross Worldwide Essence FW 7wt.  That’s a $220 rod.  The Sage Xi3 may be a hell of a rod, but at $695 it is also spendy.  Now, we usually associate Ross with reels, but they entered the rod business a few years ago and their rods have been scoring pretty well by “those that know.”  Ross is also “Made in the USA,” which makes them a rare bird indeed these days.

Bruce also prefers the non-slip loop knot as his tippet-to-fly knot.  I just learned the knot and used it to catch a few fish out of the Truckee River throwing streamers last weekend.  Pretty easy knot and one I know I should have been using for ages.

Some info on Bruce’s school…

Time for School!

Doesn't that look like a nice place for class?

I would probably like this…

Want to go Bonefishing for FREE??

UPDATE: This promotion is over.  I didn’t win… which makes me think it was totally fixed!  How could I have not been drawn out of the hundreds or thousands that entered???

That’s a silly question isn’t it?  Kind of like “would you like to be happy?” or “would you like a Newcastle?”  Silly questions indeed.

Well, Deneki Outdoors has a give away going on and all you have to do is sign up for their blog newsletter.  Um… that’s easy.

In the interests of both telling folks about cool bonefishing news and thining out the competition, I should tell you that the blog updates each are 28 MB and clog your in-box and are full of naked pictures of Janet Reno.  Yeah, you may not want to  sign up… ya know… I’ll take one for the team and let you know if anything interesting is in there.  😉

Their lodge  is on South Andros and, sadly, looks fantastic.  I say sadly because, sadly, I’m not there and likely won’t win.  I know I should be happy for whoever wins… but I won’t be.  I’ll be bitter and angry, probably for months/years.

I seem to write a lot about Deneki Outdoors and that is for one simple reason… they (really, he) consistently put out interesting/informative content about bonefish.
