El Pescador, Buccaneers and Bones

More news on Buccaneers and Bones from the filming down in Belize and El Pescador.

…this past week Ambergris Caye was host to some heavy weights in the entertainment industry as they filmed “Buccaneers and Bones”. El Pescador (Lodge) was chosen from three locations in Belize to host Orion Multimedia, Michael Keaton actor/director, Tom Brokaw news anchor/author, Yvon Chouninard founder Patagonia, Bill Klyn director Bonefish and Tarpon Trust, Zach Gilford actor, Thomas McGuane acclaimed author, Lori-Ann Murphy director of fishing at El Pescador, and Aaron Adams, scientist, Bonefish and Tarpon Trust. According to Ali Flota of El Pescador, this was the “Coup de grace of fly fishing”, and truly an honor.

Ambergris Daily Dishes on Michael Keaton

Buccaneers and Bones” is the succesor to Pirates of  the Flats and the Ambergris Daily shed a little light on the filming currently going on in Belize.

The “Buccaneers and Bones” series features the anglers’ passion for fishing and the camaraderie they share as they search for answers on how to safeguard our environment. In addition to fishing the famed salt water flats of Belize, these notables are fishing for answers, too. How can we save our last great coastal environments? It’s a question that has been the heart of Bonefish and Tarpon Trust’s mission since 1998, and is being pursued by some of the world’s top scientists.

As you can imagine, I’m looking forward to this.

Join Orvis and the Bonefish and Tarpon Trust – April 4, 2010

Have you been wanting to go on an Orvis trip?  Have you been wanting to go to Belize?  Have you been wanting to be a part of the Bonefish and Tarpon Trust‘s Traveling Angler Program?  If you answered “yes” to, well, any of the above question, I may have the skinny on just the trip for you.  Right now there are only TWO spots left.

April 4th is the date for an Orvis trip as part of BTT’s Traveling Angler Program.  Details can be found here.

You’ll even get some new gear out of it…

To make the experience even more fun, Orvis will provide each angler with a brand new Helios rod and Battenkill Large Arbor reel to help them catch as many “research subjects” as possible.

The lodge is El Pescador, which seems like a  pretty fantastic operation, and you can expect Dr. Aaron Adams to be there as well.  Here is what they say about the trip:

Proceeds from this trip will go to help Bonefish & Tarpon Trust conduct valuable research and education programs, ensuring that bonefish and tarpon will be on the flats for many years to come. An important part of BTT’s research includes collecting fin clippings for genetic analysis and tagging fish to learn more about their life cycle and migration patterns. Participating anglers will work closely with Aaron J. Adams, Ph.D., Director of Operations and Research, Bonefish & Tarpon Trust. You will help conduct valuable research while at the same time enjoying a fantastic bonefishing vacation. We chose El Pescador Lodge because it is the perfect place to experience quality bonefishing at this time of year and there is something for everyone in the family to enjoy.

Now… doesn’t that sound like a good time?  It is about $5K, putting not on the cheap side of things (I could do about 5 trips for that much cashish), but the experience is bound to be very special.

Karl’s First Bonefish

The Being Karl blog (new to me) put up a report about his trip to Belize and his first bonefish.  Always great to hear about someone’s first bonefish… it can be a revelation.

They are at El Pescador… the place I was hoping to go this summer.  I’ve moved my Belize 2010 trip to Belize 2011, but stories like this make me want to head there… um… now.

I make another cast and, bam, I get a hookup.  The fish takes off and is clearly the hardest fighting fish I’ve ever hooked on a fly.  After a couple of minutes of tussle, I bring it to the boat where Carlos reaches down, grips the fish, about 14 inches in length,  and lifts it up for me to see.  My first bonefish on a fly.  I had imagined it would take a day of trying and here we’ve been fishing 15 minutes and I’ve got my first in the boat.

El Pescador photo... go there.

I haven’t seen the Being Karl blog before.  The salty stuff is an outlier, but it is honest and not pretentious in the least.

El Pescador Vid

I saw this vid and had to share.  Thinking of getting my dad out to Ambergris this summer and the likely spot is actually El Pescador.

Fast forward to about 1:30 to get to the fishing.

Belize – 2010… maybe

I’m on the hunt for a trip that my dad and I can take to find some bones.  My dad has been going to the Babine for the past several years, but he’s not headed back in 2010.  The Babine is a beautiful place and the steelhead are amazing… last year my dad got a 25 pounder… the fish of several lifetimes.  His decision not to return, at least for now, means that he has some fly fishing capital freed up.

Yeah, the Babine is pretty sweet... and cold.

A father-son trip means this can’t be a DIY experience.  My dad has a lifetime of fishing experience, but only about 12-13 years of fly fishing, so I need a place where a double-haul isn’t mandatory, where the fish are 50 feet away, not 90 and where you find schools, not singles or doubles.

Enter Belize.  It seems like Belize and the Mexican Yucatan both provide the kind of fishing I’m looking for.

Looking at possible places to fish and outfits to book through, one has quickly risen to the fore… Ed Blank’s Adventures on the Fly.  Ed’s been very responsive on email as I’ve been asking questions and getting clarifications.  He’s let me know when the lowest cost dates are, what I can expect, what the options will be.

The option that is top of the list right now is El Pescador on Ambergris.  There are deals if you go slightly off-season that drop this lodge way down into the affordable range… below $2K.

Look for me and my dad on a flat in Belize in the summer of 2010 (if we can line up grandma to watch my daughter!).
