DB of the Year Nominee – Michael Kwong

California has a shark fin ban in place. There was a good, long run up to the ban going into place to let restaurants serving shrark fin soup run through their existing stock. Well, some folks didn’t get the memo (really, they got it, but they didn’t care anyway).

Michael Kwong owns Kwong Yip.

State authorities Friday announced the seizure of more than 2,000 pounds of shark fins from a San Francisco seafood distributor in what is the first major bust under a new California law barring the sale of the traditional Chinese delicacy.

It was likely thousands of sharks.

Here’s the full story.

Breaking Records

Saw this shared from the Suplee Fly Fishing Company Facebook page. (give them a like, if you would… support people speaking out in favor of our resources)

The comments below are theirs, not mine. I thought they’d have more authority than anything I might add.

New Women’s #12 pound world record on Fly.
So rather than comment on this post I thought I would share my thoughts here. As a guide who has participated in most of the Major Florida Keys Fly Tournaments for over a decade. I understand wha…t truly difficult accomplishment this is to achieve.
However as a Florida Keys guide for the past two decades. I all also understand how much pressure and stress this very fragile fishery is under.
I’m just not sure that in this day and age of technology this practice if killing these huge mature fish just for the sake of a world record is acceptable.
I personally have never considered killing one if these fish for this purpose. Have I killed fish while fighting them to pure exhaustion just so one of my wealthy sports could get there ever so precious “grab and grin” shot with a prehistoric beast? I would be lying if I said I haven’t. But these world record chasers are the upper tier of anglers and guides and I would think they would have a little more respect for the resource.
We have digital cameras,Face Book, Twitter, Instagram, email , FaceTime etc. these fish can be caught, taped, photographed, filmed what ever and instantly uploaded for all the world to see.
I say let’s stop killing these huge old fish just for the sake of world records. A true world record is one that released and never scored so that maybe our children have a chance to catch one of these fish some day.

What it is worth

Bonefishing is important to the Bahamas. They know that.

What it all adds up to is about $141,000,000 for the Bahamian economy.

For a country of 350,000 people, that’s a lot of scratch.

Lots of good work going on in the Bahamas.

Despite the economic importance of this sportfish, there are still a number of gaps in the understanding of some basic bonefish ecology. For some time now, local Bahamian companies involved in the bonefishing industry have been working with global experts to gain a better understanding of the life cycle of bonefish and the ecosystems in which they live. By pairing local knowledge and international expertise, the aim is to gather data that will help conserve and protect bonefish for future generations of Bahamians and visitors.

Bonefish Awesomeness

Well. This is something you don’t see every day (or ever lifetime).

Go over to the Moldy Chum to see the details. This is a spawning aggregation. We knew this happened, but had never actually caught it on tape. Awesome site.

The Skink List

Maybe you are a fan of the writing of one Mr. Carl Hiaasen. If you are unfamiliar with his works, I suggest you check him out. He writes pretty much exclusively about Florida and the word “bonefish” can be found in just about every work, despite the books not being about fishing.

One of my favorite characters in his books is Skink. Skink is a vigilante out to protect the Florida he loves from threats of development and degradation. If he were a Dungeons & Dragons character his alignment would be Chaotic Good. He blows things up, kidnaps tourists, beats litterers and does worse to those most responsible for ruining a good thing.

Many a moment have I wished Skink were alive and well, stalking through the Everglades, one glass eye and his perfect white teeth grinning at some mischief he could cause for people who really and truly deserve it.

Here are a few of the projects I wish he’d get a hold of.

I’m sure there are more… many, many more. Skink would be a busy, busy man.

Florida, beautiful and imperiled

Eat More Brook Trout is a blog more associated with western trout fishing than with things salty, but he recently put up a series of posts about the ecological issues facing Florida. Since this is a Florida heavy kind of group, I figured I’d share those with you. See what you think.

Don’t dig up the mangroves

The folks of Treasure Cay are not happy with a new proposed lodge. Turns out the lodge has plans to dredge a creek and get rid of some mangroves, which all seems terribly at odds with the idea of a fishing lodge.

Although unsanctioned dredging in a creek near the entrance of Treasure Cay was reportedly stopped on Wednesday, residents plan to move forward with their petition against developers of the proposed Treasure Cay hotel and fishing lodge, Sand Bar Club and Spa.

The title of the story mentions “Abaco Lodge,” but by that they mean a lodge in Abaco, not THE Abaco Lodge. The Sand Bar Club and Spa is the culprit in this case.

More on that story here. Looks like the dredging is being done by this PLP Member of Parliament’s company.

The oceans are broken

The state of the ocean is grim. That’s the take-away I’m getting from this story about a sailor who went from Japan to San Francisco and saw a lot of trash and very little else. Not good. Not good at all.

There is short-term gain and long-term devastation being sown every day out there in the big blue. Wildly depressing.

Luckily, I have a short attention span.

Look, a squirrel!

When it comes to the flats…

There is one organization you need to tip your hat to, more than any other. That is the Bonefish and Tarpon Trust. This is the time they are looking to wrap up their membership drive for the year. Be a responsible angler and become a member.

Did I mention… I love sharks

Not only do I love sharks, but my girl loves sharks. She will hang out at the pier with me for hours and hours and hours, mostly just waiting for something to happen. This is time without screens of any kind. All the entertainment is that which we make ourselves. It’s wonderful.

We were out at the pier again yesterday and it was great. We got two Leopard Sharks and got to see several others. On a more unhappy note I had to tell a guy his two Leopards were undersized (36″ is the minimum size and his were probably 24″ and 20″). The guy was just clueless.

Another guy had three Seven Gill sharks on a rope. I can’t keep people from taking sharks out of the bay, but when I went back home to read up on the regs I saw the legal limit is actually one Seven Gill. So, one guy probably killed two undersized Leopards and another guy was two over the limit.

Frustrating and probably more regulation breaking than I’ve seen in a single day in a long time.

My girl with a 24" Leopard. Damn those things are pretty.
