Last Ditch for Long Island

We are a man down for Long Island. He’s all paid up, the full payment has already been made to the lodge to cover everything, but going with 5 is not as good as going with 6. We need to even things out. To do that, we just need someone to commit to the trip, to book their airfare and to pay for their trip.

At this point, I’m willing to offer the trip at $500 off so our reluctant departing angler (also known as my dad) can get most of his money back, if not all of it.

So… $1,495, for a week of guided bonefishing on Long Island, March 18-25.

It is the kind of deal you aren’t likely to see again.

If you want to go, it is a first-to-book scenario.

This is where we'll be going... looks kind of nice.

Glovers

Me, casting, in Belize.

Me, casting, in Belize.

Found this cool little story about fishing Glover’s in Belize from the Miami Herald.

South Water is part of the Great Barrier Reef and the surrounding protected marine preserve. The island pokes out of the second largest living reef in the world, rich with giant heads of coral and schools of vibrant reef fish. Our target species lay not there, but in the shallows and coves that tightly ring these islands as well those of Glover’s Reef. Glover’s sits 30 miles offshore. Beyond it, the water rolls out into the open ocean, not to be interrupted again for hundreds of miles.

If I were a betting man…

I’d wager there might be a bonefish somewhere around here…

French Polynesia.

Yeah...

Yeah…

It can be fun to look at a Google Map like this and just imagine what might be there. So many little atolls and I’d bet some of them have a bonefish or GT hanging about.

Here’s one place I found that fishes some of these places… TahitiExpeditions.

The Tarpon of St. Croix

There are a few places this happens. The best known is probably Robbie’s in the Keys. It also happens at the Sunset Lagoon café in San Pedro, Belize. I guess it also happens at Rum Runners in St. Croix in the USVI.

The USVI is not a bonefish destination, although they are there in limited numbers. If you find yourself out there, think tarpon instead.

Good Content

Deneki is the content king when it comes to bonefishing. They just put out a mountain of good information. With that in mind, you might want to check out the list of their top ten bonefishing related posts.

Goodness.

Andros South… I have some very fond memories of that place.

Nice bone, tagged and ready to go. Photo by Cameron Miller.

Origin of the Sky

Well… this looks like a bit of awesome sauce. Love the slo-mo bonefish eat.

I have yet to fish the Caribbean side of Mexico and I’d very much like to do so. My wife happens to speak Spanish, something a Dr. in California finds need of for sure. I plan to exploit her knowledge.

One Long Island Spot Open – March 18-25

The Long Island trip has one spot open now. We were full, and now we are not and we are looking for one fun soul to join our merry group.

This is where we'll be going... looks kind of nice.

This is where we’ll be going… looks kind of nice.

Price is $1,995, which is pretty hard to beat for a week of guided fly fishing. We have a good group going already and hope we can fill that last slot with someone who will appreciate the trip.

Get in touch at bjorn@anglingdestinations dot com if you are interested.

The reason we have a slot open hits way too close to home. My dad won’t be joining us in Long Island so he can spend time with my mom who just got diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic cancer is almost never discovered early and by the time it is found it is almost always far too late in the game to mount a defense. So it is with my mom, who agreed to marry my dad 47 years ago today.

It is a very sobering thing. This is stage four. There is no surgery. There is no chemo.

I’ve never felt so grown up as I have these past few days, realizing I’ll lose my mother soon.

I’ll be needing a little time on the flats soon, for sure.

Inagua

By CHERYL BLACKERBY

By CHERYL BLACKERBY

This seems like a very cool place, it must be said. I’ve also heard it is a sensitive place so days on Inagua are limited to preserve the resource. I found this story about the place and thought I’d share.

More than 70,000 West Indian flamingos, the Bahamas’ national bird, nest in Inagua. Inagua National Park Warden Henry Nixon and I watched hundreds of the pink birds from the bank of a pond in the shade of mangroves. Soon, I was rewarded with an even more spectacular sight — a flock of roseate spoonbills flying with flamingos, all pretty pink.

The DIY Bible

I recently received a nice package in the mail containing the book “Do It Yourself Bonefishing,” by Rod Hamilton  (with Kirk Deeter). I spent some time with it last night and I have to say, I wish I had this with me on a few previous trips to the Bahamas.

The risk, with this kind of book, is that the locations listed will get more traffic. The more traffic a bonefish flat gets, the worse the fishing. Bonefish visit the same flats relentlessly and if you teach one school of fish not to eat a Gotcha, that same school will remember it for the next angler… and the next angler… and the next.

Good Book Rod!

Good Book Rod!

The alternate view one could choose to adopt would be that by alerting the DIY set to the truly large number of possibilities, the few hardest hit flats might see less pressure. I also have to consider that really, there aren’t too many of us out there looking for a DIY bonefishing flat. It may seem like there are, but I think there are a far greater number of anglers who hope to take such trips than number of anglers who have wet their toes in pursuit of bonefish, on their own, in these far flung locations.

So, I say again that I wish I had this book prior to my earlier Bahamian DIY efforts. It would have helped a lot. The book is full of information and even gives cautionary tales when needed. I’d say it is a must-have if you plan to visit the Caribbean on your own, on foot, in pursuit of bonefish.

Just a little reminder… the more you fish a spot, the worse it is going to fish. If you find fish one day on one flat, don’t go back. Find a new spot. Explore. Expand. It’s the only way to keep the good spots good.

Mexico, the Drake and Shane

Awesome.

Awesome.

Got the winter edition of the Drake and I was happy to see my friend Shane (and his wife) in there smacking some fish down in Mexico.

I got to fish with Shane down in Belize, as well as spending a fair amount of time with him on the Lower Sac, Upper Sac and McCloud. He’s one of the best anglers I’ve ever fished with and has been generous with his time and expertise.

Great article, written by Tom Bie, who was also on the trip. They are down in at Paradise Lodge on the southern Yucatan coast and it looks pretty nice.

Check it out, if you haven’t already.
