Costa Rican Bonefish

No one is going to go out and travel specifically to Costa Rica to go bonefishing.  That would be pure foolishness.  However, they are there.  Of course, they are also in Panama and have been caught off the coast of Texas, but that doesn’t mean they are there in great numbers.  I keep getting surprised about all the places bonefish turn up.  I wouldn’t be surprised to hear about bonefish being caught in Haiti or Louisiana.

Here’s a story about bonefish in Costa Rica from Costa Rica Outdoors:

Some months ago, we had a bit of controversy going here regarding bonefish, and whether we have any in Costa Rica waters. We never were able to determine whether the species, popular in Florida waters and traditionally caught on the inshore flats on a fly rod or light tackle, had actually been caught here.

So… they are there, which is good to know.

  1. I’m not surprised by this report, it’s the tropical Caribbean after all. But still no idea what species it is. Most Caribbean islands have (or used to have) at least some bonefish, but not necessarily in high numbers. Haiti? I doubt there’s much in the way of fish left swimming around that island. Same for Dominican Republic, Jamaica.

  2. I doubt that there are many bones in a place like Haiti, but I have to think there is at least one… maybe dying of loneliness.

Are there places that bonefish have been totally eradicated from? I’d think that there is a high likelihood that some populations could be 99.5% destroyed, but bones seem to naturally expand and constantly look for footholds… hence bones being caught in Texas, populations being formed in San Diego Bay, bones being caught off Long Beach. Love to get your thoughts Aaron.

  3. Saw several groups of blue tint bonefish scouring right near shore feeding off the mangrove droppings at high tide for several days recently, this past Labor Day weekend. In Playa Conchal in Costa Rica. Was pretty amazed at the amount of them I saw.
