March Madness… Cheeky Style

It’s that time again.  I understand there is something happening with basketball, which I haven’t watched since Jordan retired (the first time). There is another March Madness happening and that is happening over at Cheeky Fly Fishing.

This has the brackets you might expect, but instead of Stanford or Cal or Sonoma State (holla) there are fish.  The first one in the first bracket is… of course… BONEFISH.

This event benefits the Bonefish and Tarpon Trust.

There are a ton of prizes on hand from great sponsors like Patagonia, Yellow Dog Fly Fishing Adventures, The Fly Shop, Fishpond, Teeny and Thomas & Thomas.

It costs you $5 and that goes to help bonefish and tarpon.

Great job Cheeky.  Hope it is a great success.

Belizians say “no thanks” to offshore oil

Now, this isn’t an official kind of decision, but a “People’s Referendum” in Belize voted down the notion of offshore oil rigs beyond the Belizian coast.

This sounds a lot like good news.

Tribal Bonefish – Keep up with Conservation

Just so you know… there is a site called Tribal Bonefish that keeps track of things conservation.  It happens to be the work of uber angler Aaron Adams.  Yes… you should probably find yourself over there.

Here’s the recent update:

Posted February 13

The Everglades Foundation is asking for your help in getting funding restored for the Everglades. The Florida Senate recently proposed a budget that ELIMINATES funding for critical Everglades Restoration projects. This will negatively impact recreational fishing and fish
habitats in the Everglades, Florida Bay, the Florida Keys, and even the east and west coasts of Florida the receive effluent from Lake Okeechobee. Plus, the lack of restoration funds will impact the safety of the drinking water supply for South Florida. Everglades Foundation has set up a web site that makes it easy for you to help: www.fundtheeverglades.com And after you visit their web site, send a letter, email, or call Tallahassee and tell them to restore the funding.

Yes, even sharks should benefit from good handling for catch and release fishing, especially when they are caught and released in a place like Florida, where they are protected.

The salt marshes of the Mississippi River Delta may be the most endangered habitats in the United States. They are disappearing at an alarming rate due to erosion (a natural process), augmented by the channelization of the Mississippi River which was once the source of new sediment to build the marshes. And now they’re subjected to the insults of oil spills and other threats. But there are ways you can help.

Kill some Lion Fish

I was watching Buccaneers and Bones from the ole DVR last night. It is a good show… I like it.  It isn’t a young crowd, really, with Yvon and Tom Brokaw and the rest of the crew, but they are fun to watch anyway. They are fishing places I want to fish and I’m pretty sure I’d enjoy a day on the water with any of them… especially Aaron Adams who heads the Bonefish & Tarpon Trust.

I was pleased to see, again, the conservation message. They not only talked about safe handling of bonefish when there are sharks around, but they also talked about the threat of the invasive Lion Fish.

If you are not aware, Lion Fish are little fuquers.  They are invasive, coming from the Pacific, and they are voracious predators capable of eating ALL the juvenile  fish on a small reef. The native fish just don’t recognize them as predators and they end up in the bellies of the beautiful, but deadly Lions.

In this particular episode Yvon Chouinard goes out with Deep Water Cay’s dive master, Molly Brady… with the bonus video of Molly swimming in a bikini, which might make even the Trout Underground appreciate the virtues of the tropics.

Happy to see Lion Fish getting their time in the spotlight… and then their time on the spear tip.

El Pescador holds Tournament to Benefit BTT

A tournament at El Pescador featured tagging of bones, permit and tarpon. Sounds kind of awesome. The tournament was held by El Pescador for the benefit of the Bonefish & Tarpon Trust.

If you read this blog, you should probably join BTT

Yeah… it is pretty clear cut… there is one organization out there doing the dirty work. It is the Bonefish and Tarpon Trust.

There are some promotions going on at the moment to convince you all to go ahead and make the financial commitment.

We are having monthly give-aways of gear (this month it’s Howler Brothers), next month Cheeky, then Orvis,…. But best of all, the final drawing at the end of the year is a trip to Ascension Bay.  And for people who join and renew at $100 of higher (we don’t want to forget them), there is a year-end raffle for a trip to Pesca Maya.

So… what do you think… why don’t you go ahead and do it.  I’m a member.  Just say’n.

Don’t be that guy that doesn’t support the cause, man. (yes, I have had a couple)

Belize… the difference between passing and making laws

Belize has passed some great laws protecting bonefish, permit and tarpon. That’s great.  Way to go Belize. Passing laws like that is not easy.

However… enforcement lags behind and there are some real threats out there in Belizean waters right now.  Case in point is the matter of a boat, fishing out of San Pedro, that appears to be netting permit, killing permit and selling permit. (thanks for the link Adam)

Authorities have been alerted (thanks in part to the co-owner of El Pescador), but nothing has come of it. While there is a law passed to protect permit, it is not a reality in some of the waters around Ambergris.

So… Come on Belize. Put some teeth in there.

Tarpon. There’s an app for that? Whoa.

Did you know that the Bonefish and Tarpon Trust has an APP?  Yeah… they do.

It is called “Tarpon Master” and it helps you calculate the weight of that big, huge tarpon without taking it out of the water, dragging it up onto the boat, damaging its internal organs and killing the wonderful brute because you wanted to get a scale on it.

Yeah… I’m going to say that this is kind of awesome.
