A few thoughts…

  • Saw Familiar Waters for the first time in a long time… turns out they were at South Andros Lodge (owned/booked through Deneki Outdoors) and one of the participants was Mike Bias, old friend and now MT outfitter.
  • The Croup Fairy has visited our house… the bastard offspring of an illicit affair between a seal and the Tooth Fairy.  I’m not a fan.
  • I’ll be volunteering at the Fly Fishing West show in Pleasanton at the Bonefish & Tarpon Trust booth.  I’ll be there all three days.  They are trying to rope Val Atkinson into stopping by, otherwise it will just be me, trying to shake some money from your pocket to help bonefish, tarpon, permit and snook.

So, how cold was it?

Just how cold was that recent cold snap and what did it mean for the fish?

Well, Aaron Adams was in Abaco trying to work with guides on bonefish tagging as part of his work with the Bonefish & Tarpon Trust.  When it’s 57, it turns out even Dr. Adams has a hard time finding fish.  He also related that the lack of heating, while normally not an  issue in the Bahamas, IS an issue when its 53 at night.

@flatsdoctor: I’m in Abaco, at the film site for Pirates of the Flats – Abaco Lodge. It’s too cold to fish – 57deg, high winds, no fish.

Out looking for dead bonefish for BTT, it turns out, was Captain Dave, the guide who writes the Guilttrip25 blog (of which I just became aware).  Turns out it was cold enough to kill bonefish as Captain Dave found a few.

Grand Bahama – Day 4 – The Wind

I could hear the wind last night… it was blowing hard.  Weather.com said the wind today in Freeport was going to be around 17 mph.  The wind on the East End had to be harder.

When I got to the first flat there were waves… waves are not good for sight fishing for bonefish.  The water was churned up and visibility could be measured in inches, not feet.

Second stop and it was just as bad.

Here’s the flat yesterday…

Same flat today…

Oh… that’s not good.

This was going to be a tough, tough day.  Forget that the wind  had to be blowing 25 mph… there was no seeing the fish.

So, what do you do when you are on a fishing trip and the weather doesn’t cooperate?  You go fishing.

I drove as far east as I could and found a beached barge I remembered from my first trip.  Put on a clouser and went in search of something that would eat.

skunk breaker, but no bonefish (a nassau grouper, me thinks)

Also found a cuda.

Little Cuda

Little Cuda

This guy didn’t like the windy conditions either.

I found a flat that was sheltered and the water was clear… but the fish weren’t there.

Crab.

Crab.

I tried a road I had been told about heading to the North side of the island, that would have been sheltered from the wave action that had dirtied the water on the South side… but it was too much for my mico-compact.

Basically, it was not going to be a good bonefishing day.  So, I went to Geneva’s and had some cracked conch and Kalik.

Tomorrow I fly out, but not until 2:00, so I have some time to try for bones in the AM.  If the wind isn’t as bad (and it isn’t supposed to be as bad tomorrow) I might have a shot.  The temps are supposed to be cooler, but, you go fishing when you can, not only when everything is perfect.

Tag Ends – 1/4/10

Looks like the upcoming episode of Pirates of the Flats is going to look at predators and bonefish mortality.  Good stuff.  ESPN… set your DVR.

1/10/2010
A look at the sharks that prey upon bonefish, and how anglers can increase the odds of bonefish survival after catch & release. A veteran fisherman casts at a bonefish of a liefetime, estimated at 15 pounds. Biography on author Thomas McGuane.

I am in the home stretch for my Grand Bahama trip… I have run out of #6 and #4 hooks.  Waiting for my new order of hooks to come in.  Still a lot of tying to be done.  Tying up some Horrors… man… that has to be one of the easiest flies ever created.

Still a lot of tying to be done.

It looks like I may follow up my Jan. Grand Bahama trip with a trip this summer to Belize with my dad.  We’ll see.

Happy New Year

Happy New  Year.  I hope 2010 is as full of fishing as you have a reasonable expectation to hope for.

It looks like I may very well have two trips to take  in 2010… my January solo trip to Grand Bahama and a late summer trip with my dad to either Mexico or Belize.

It promises to be a great year.

In 2010 may your loops be tight, your back cast free of snags and your knots unbreakable.

Pirates Are Here!

Update #1: Pirates are HERE.  Just watched the first episode.  Love it.  Wish it were longer.  Wish I was there.  Still, love it.  Great to see Lefty out there showing Brokaw the ropes.  Neat to see a bonefish being tagged.  Loved to see Abaco and tails… love the tails.  Looking forward to #2.

Original Post

No, not the Seychelles pirates (well, I guess they could be, but that’s not what we’re talking about here).  Pirates of the Flats is set to launch on Dec. 27th.

A Bonefish for Christmas

Seems a tall order… to get a bonefish for Christmas… but that’s what I got.

Ceramic Beauty

Ceramic Beauty

This bonefish was created by Fred Gordon, artist and guide up in Dunsmuir, CA.  Fred is as talented on the river as he is in the studio.

About a decade ago I was just really getting into fly fishing.  My dad had a day scheduled with Fred for closing day on the McCloud for what promised to be a great father-son trip.  Unfortunately, my dad then fell off a ladder and broke all sorts of bones that would be needed for a day on the water.  Fred and I went out by ourselves.  It was a magical day.  Fred taught me how to tight-line nymph, a technique that is deadly in the free-stone, pocket-water rivers of Northern CA.  I had 20-25 fish that day, including a couple browns around 20″.  It was a day that changed my life.  Before that day, fly fishing was a lot of fun.  After that day, fly fishing was an obsession.

We have three of Fred’s trout on our wall and  now, a bonefish.

Merry Christmas all.

Field and Stream's 2010 Predictions

Field and Stream is all of a sudden relevant to me.  I had no idea.

In their 2010 Fly Fishing Predictions they make a couple of bonefishy calls.  Here’s one.

I predict that two major world record marks for fly-caught fish will fall in 2010–redfish, (the fish will be caught in February, in Louisiana), and bonefish, which will be caught off Oahu this summer.  I predict that I will also hear about at least 40 obscure “line class” records, e.g. “alligator gar, on the fly, on 4-pound test,” and that I will not stroke the egos of the people who set those silly records by writing about them.

Hawaii certainly does have that potential.   That would be exciting.

Here are a few Bonefish on the Brain 2010 Predictions:

  • As soon as I get back from my January trip to the Bahamas I will begin fantasizing about my next trip.
  • I will tie at least 600 bonefish flies in 2010.  I will be lucky to use 10.
  • The Bonefish and Tarpon Trust will have a banner year in large part due to the utter and total rulingness of the Pirates of the Flats tv program on ESPN.
  • My trout fishing days will dwarf my bonefishing days.
  • I will dream about bonefish at least 3 times.
  • I will bore at least 40 people to tears with talk of bonefish.

2010 should be an interesting year for sure.
